Bel Papyrus Limited (BPL) is the leading tissue manufacturer in West Africa and the largest provider of tissue reels for local converters in Nigeria. While providing a wide range of tissue reels like bathroom, napkin, facial and kitchen towels, BPL is making substantial strides in promoting environmental sustainability and circular economy principles in West Africa. Its waste paper collection center has an impactful contributions towards a cleaner and more sustainable Nigeria.
The Waste Paper Center (WPC) has significantly expanded its supplier network, now boasting 1,281 suppliers from across Nigeria. It has also extended the collection efforts to neighboring countries, including Cameroon, Benin Republic, Togo, and Ghana. This extensive network ensures a steady and reliable supply of waste paper, essential for the recycling operations.
In the quest for sustainability, job creation has been a cornerstone of the WPC efforts. This section of BPL has created over 6,405 jobs within Nigeria’s recycling sector. This includes more than 600 jobs at dump sites, where the WPC facilitated the evacuation of over 2,640 tons of waste from dump sites last year. By converting this waste into valuable tissue products, BPL has provided employment opportunities and contributed to a cleaner environment.
Bel Papyrus is proud to operate the most sophisticated de-inking and fiber cleaning facility in West Africa. This advanced technology enables the tissue mill to process and recycle waste paper with unparalleled efficiency. Currently, the WPC handles over 58.66% of all waste paper recycled in Nigeria. The facility’s cutting-edge capabilities ensure that a significant portion of waste paper is effectively repurposed, reducing reliance on raw materials and minimizing environmental impact.
One of the most profound environmental benefits of BPL efforts is the significant reduction in carbon emissions. Recycling one ton of paper can save 17 trees, conserve 7,000 gallons of water, and cut carbon emissions by one metric ton. With Bel Papyrus recycling over 40,000 tons of waste per year, the company is making a considerable impact on carbon reduction. These efforts help decrease deforestation and the energy-intensive processes associated with producing paper from raw materials, thereby mitigating climate change and promoting a healthier environment.
Bel Papyrus stands as a leader in sustainability and circular economy in Nigeria and West Africa. Through the expansion of supplier network, job creation, advanced recycling technology, and commitment to environmental stewardship, the company is making significant strides in reducing waste and carbon emissions. The efforts are not only helping to create a cleaner Nigeria but also setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in the region. Finally, Bel Papyrus remains dedicated to its mission of environmental sustainability, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
